At the harbour (0.5 miles), board a boat to the Farne Islands and cross your fingers for sightings of grey seals, dolphins and puffins with colourful beaks. The nearby coastal towns of Bamburgh (3.5 miles), Newton-by-the-Sea (7 miles), Embleton (7.5 miles), and Craster (10.5 miles) are all ripe for exploration. Keen to absorb some local history? Drive 16 miles inland to the market town of Alnwick, and be sure to visit its majestic castle, famous for its appearance in the Harry Potter films. Further afield, Northumberland National Park (21.5 miles) is wonderful for day hikes through outstanding scenery.
